Ear Wax Removal At Home | Ear Clogged Home Remedy | Ear Cleaning Machine

What is safe to try, and where the line is

Most blocked ears clear on their own. Some are worth a gentle attempt at home. A few need someone with a light and proper equipment, and the useful part of a page like this is knowing which is which.

What causes a build-up

Narrow or hairy canals, hearing aids and in-ear headphones, and simply getting older all make wax more likely to accumulate. So does cleaning: buds and picks press wax inwards, and frequent washing strips the canal and prompts it to produce more.

Worth trying at home

Warm water irrigation

The most useful home method for wax you can see. Water at body temperature, aimed at the canal wall rather than straight in, squeezed gently, repeated lightly rather than forced. Water much warmer or cooler than body temperature can make you feel dizzy. This is what our ear washer kit does.

Softening drops

Olive oil, or a proprietary drop from a pharmacy, used for a few days. Often this is enough on its own, and it makes irrigation easier if it is not. We do not sell drops; a pharmacist will sort you out cheaply.

Be careful with, or skip

Hydrogen peroxide

It is widely suggested and it does fizz, but it irritates some people's canals badly and it is not right for every ear. Ask a pharmacist before using it rather than taking a recipe off the internet.

Steam

Steam does not reach the ear canal in any meaningful way. It may feel pleasant if you are congested. It is not earwax removal.

Ear candling

We sell ear candles, and they are not a wax removal method. No suction has been demonstrated and the residue inside a burned cone is candle material rather than earwax. They are a relaxation ritual, adults only, and never to be used alone.

Anything rigid

Picks, scoops, hairgrips, matchsticks. If you cannot see the end of it, you cannot control it.

Stop and see a clinician if

There is pain, discharge, bleeding, sudden or one-sided hearing loss or dizziness. If a blockage has not shifted after a couple of gentle attempts. If you have grommets, a perforated eardrum or have had ear surgery, in which case nothing should go into the ear at all. Wax impacted deep in the canal is a five minute job for someone with suction and a light, and a bad idea to chase at home.
