  "description": "Most people clean their ears with a cotton bud, and most blockages are made worse that way. A bud fits neatly into the canal, so what it mostly does is compact the wax further in. An ear washer works the other way round: warm water goes in gently along the canal wall and comes back out, bringing loose wax with it.\n\nUse it with water at body temperature. Water much colder or hotter than that can make you feel dizzy or sick, which is a known effect and nothing to do with the product being faulty. Tilt your head over a sink, aim the tip at the wall of the canal rather than straight down it, and squeeze gently. Let it drain, then repeat if you need to. Several light flushes beat one hard one.\n\nIt is for wax you can see or feel near the opening. It is not for a blockage deep in the canal: that is impacted wax, and it needs a clinician with a light and a proper suction tool. Forcing water at impacted wax is how eardrums get damaged. If the ear will not clear after a couple of gentle attempts, stop and book an appointment.\n\nDo not use it at all on an ear that is painful, discharging, swollen or infected, and do not use it if you have a perforated eardrum, grommets, or have had ear surgery. Water reaching the middle ear through a perforation causes real problems. If you are unsure whether any of that applies to you, ask before you buy.\n\nThe tips are silicone and come in more than one size, which matters more than it sounds: a tip that is too small gets pushed in too far. Rinse everything through after use, let it dry, and keep your own tips rather than sharing them.",
